Caleb's birthday party

For friends and family, Caleb's 2nd birthday party is going to be March 1st at our house from 2-4 pm. I sent an evite, but sometimes those end up in spam filters. So, there are the specs on the big partay!

We got the photos below taken at a place in the mall for FREE because I had a coupon from when Tiana was here. It was quite an ordeal just to get him to let go of Greg, and then to get him to not cry. Eventually, the balls won, and he started playing and forgot how scary it was. Crazily enough, we are going to JcPenney tomorrow to get another set of pictures taken, so that we have enough to give out. (The other was just one pic for free.) I can't believe I am going to do it again!

One-month stats

Carly was 8 lbs 12 ounces at her one month weight check! That's almost two pounds bigger than her birth weight, in only four weeks, which figures to half a pound a week! To me, that is huge. They didn't check her length but I can tell she's a LOT longer, because her newborn pants fit now and she is actually too long for a couple of outfits.

This morning she smiled at me for the first time on purpose. She makes a lot a smiley-looking faces when she's awake and happy, but never did it while looking at me (or anyone). So I guess we can call this her first deliberate smile!

I know it's been tooo long since I updated, but man, I've been busy. It's hard to find time or energy to blog, and finding both at the same time is even more rare. Carly likes to be held a lot, so I'm getting good at typing one-handed again. It's not any more fun than the last time I tried it.

Caleb is getting used to having "bebe" in the house. He pretty much ignores her for the most part. I've told people it's like having another dog to him, it just doesn't affect his like that much. He has figured out that when she cries to give her a pacifier, and if we leave one within his reach it is his mission to put it in her mouth, regardless of whether she is sound asleep, eating, or screaming. He is such a smart little boy! He does like to give Carly kisses and rub her head, and occasionally poke her, but only twice has he deliberately been mean to her. Once at Target she was on the verge and he was napless for the day he stole her paci and tried poking her in the eye. Good thing he couldn't really reach her! The other night he poked her hard in the forehead scarily close to her soft spot and made us just about want to pack his bagsand send him to Australia for that one. He knows better than to touch her head any way but "gentle" and "soft," but the heathen two-year-old came out in him for a minute. While we were checking Carly's head for signs of brain damage, he went and stood on the keyboard of Greg's laptop, which I had hastily left on the floor in my flight to Carly's aid. Little booger! Other than those two incidents, he is good, toward her. Us, on the other hand, is another story. He really likes to throw and hit things when he doesn't get his way, and sometimes for no visible reason at all than just to be defiant. I'm not sure what to do to stop the behaviors. Ignore it? Spank? Time-outs? Distraction? This parenting thing is just as hard as I expected but I really thought I would be better at it, like more instinctive.

The absolute cutest thing I have ever seen, though, is his obsession with wanting to hold her hand in the car. Her seat is next to his, and they face each other, and he looooooves to hold her hand while we go for "car rides." So cute. I can see him getting into physical fights later in life trying to protect her.

Carly is four weeks old already! I can't even believe how fast (and slow) the time has gone. She is still very newborn-y, but she is getting the hang of sleeping now, which makes me feel like a new person. One night when Greg was gone I put her in her bed in her room and she slept better and longer. And so did I!! We just had to figure out her groove, and finally did. She is growing fast and getting longer and heavier. Newborn diapers are getting too small now. She goes for her one-month checkup next week so we'll know how much she weighs but I expect her to be at least 9 pounds by then. She eats so much! I had tried giving her a bottle a few times, and she really prefers one brand to another. Too bad, because I only have one of those, and I just bought a whole set of the other. That's life I guess. The good thing is that she will take a bottle period. I have been giving her one at night, the first time she wakes up, and she sleeps a little longer after that. Or maybe I am just imagining that, but it seems like she sleeps longer after a bottle.

My newest obsession is making hairbows for Carly. Right, she has no hair yet, but I have a cute little stretch lace headband that you can clip a bow to, so the girl wears bows already! I made a cute Valentine's Day one last night. I'm thinking about selling them when I get good at it, but right now I still need more practice.

It's time to start thinking about Caleb's birthday! Yikes. He will be two before we know it. I think we will have a small party here at the house, like last year, although we hope for no stomach flu this year. Homemade cake, a few party hats, and a couple of presents and there is a party for the scrapbook.
